Caregiver Burnout is Real

CAREGIVER BURNOUT: Sometimes the Care Plan Needs to Include the Caregiver, Too. 🕊️

Caregiver burnout isn’t always something we can fix with “more self-care.” Sometimes we need to look at how the caregiving itself is structured.

Caregiving can mean changing shifts, unpredictable days, difficult emotions, physical demands, and complicated family relationships—all while trying to stay focused on the person who needs you.

So how can we make it more manageable?

🌿 Change the shifts when possible.

Long stretches without relief can wear down even the strongest caregiver. Rotate responsibilities, shorten shifts when possible, and build in real time away.

🌿 Acknowledge the emotional weight.

Grief, frustration, guilt, sadness, anger and love can exist at the same time. You need somewhere safe to put those emotions—not just somewhere to hide them.

🌿 Share the physical responsibility.

Transfers, bathing, dressing, repositioning and constant movement take a toll. Ask for help, use proper equipment and techniques, and don’t make one person responsible for everything.

🌿 Protect family relationships.

Caregiving can bring old disagreements and new resentment to the surface. Instead of asking, “Who is doing enough?” try asking, “How can we divide this in a way that is realistic for everyone?”

🌿 Stay focused on TODAY.

You don’t have to solve next month during today’s difficult afternoon. Ask yourself:

What does my loved one need today? What do I need today? What can wait?

And perhaps most importantly—check on the caregiver before the caregiver reaches the breaking point.

Burnout prevention isn’t about becoming stronger.

It’s about creating a caregiving situation that doesn’t require one person to carry everything. 💚
