MemoryNest Caregiver Tip 🌿 Making Dressing Easier

Making Dressing Easier
For a senior living with Alzheimer’s or dementia, getting dressed can sometimes feel confusing or overwhelming. A calm routine and a little extra patience can make a big difference.
👚 Keep choices simple.
Offer two outfits instead of an entire closet. Too many choices can create frustration.
👖 Lay clothing out in order.
Place items in the order they’ll be put on — underwear first, then pants, shirt, socks and shoes.
🧦 Choose comfortable, easy clothing.
Elastic waistbands, Velcro closures, slip-on shoes and simple tops can help maintain independence longer.
🗣️ Give one direction at a time.
Instead of saying, “Get dressed,” try: “Let’s put your shirt on.” Then gently move to the next step.
🤍 Assist — don’t automatically take over.
Allow extra time for them to do what they still can. Maintaining independence is important for confidence and dignity.
🌿 Keep the routine familiar.
Dressing around the same time, in the same place and in the same order each day can help reduce confusion.
And remember: the goal isn’t getting dressed quickly — it’s helping someone feel comfortable, capable and respected.
