🪺 CAREGIVER TIP | Creating a Safe Living Space

For someone living with Alzheimer’s or dementia, a clear and familiar environment can mean greater safety, less confusion, and more independence. 🕊️
Simple changes can make a big difference:
🏡 Keep walkways clear — Remove clutter, cords, small furniture, and anything that could cause a fall.
💡 Improve lighting — Keep rooms, hallways, and especially pathways to the bathroom well lit.
🧹 Secure rugs & flooring — Remove loose rugs or make sure they are firmly secured.
🪑 Keep furniture familiar — Frequently rearranging furniture can increase confusion and make navigating the home more difficult.
🔒 Secure unsafe areas — Medications, cleaning products, sharp objects, and other hazards should be safely stored.
🚪 Consider wandering risks — Door alarms, locks placed appropriately, and other safety measures may become necessary as dementia progresses.
🪧 Use simple visual cues — Labels or pictures on doors, drawers, and cabinets can help someone find what they need with less frustration.
Remember: the goal isn’t to take away independence—it’s to create an environment where independence can continue as safely as possible.
Small changes today can help prevent a frightening accident tomorrow. 🕊️
